As we have slowly emerged from the awfulness of the Pandemic, it has been noticeable that a number of new businesses are showing up in Ilfracombe. Fore Street and the High Street have both got several new names - mostly shops, but there is even a new pub (the Snug and Hide). Coastal Cooking is a more unusual business and new to Fore Street. We spoke to its founder Ian Jarmarkier.

 

"Coastal Cooking is a recreational cookery school, offering clients tuition but with an emphasis on making it a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Our courses are popular with individuals and groups of friends or family alike. The courses are very hands-on. Although I demonstrate some techniques, everyone gets to do the preparation and cooking themselves, as this is the best way to learn. There is also plenty of tasting throughout sessions, with participants cooking their own lunch during the full day courses. The only thing they don't have to do themselves is the washing up."

"We offer a wide range of course topics. Full day courses include Italian and Indian cookery, game and seasonal food, fish, culinary techniques, vegan and vegetarian cookery, and our most popular course, Bread-making. Bakers take home a big bag of the loaves they have made.

"We have recently introduced a series of short (two hour) courses. These allow guests to focus on a single topic - pasta-making, pizzas and shellfish and we will be adding a fish course as well. Participants can either either eat the fruits of their labours on the spot or take them home with them.

 

"We have been running cookery courses since 2010. Until this year, we were based near Dulverton and also had a gourmet B&B and wedding venue. We had been planning to relocate at some point but lockdown spurred us into action, as we had to cancel all the weddings. We now just have the cookery school and chose Ilfracombe as we wanted to move closer to the sea and make the most of the friendly, lively, artistic atmosphere of the town.

"We have a had almost the full range of abilities on our courses - from professional chefs and caterers to people who have barely been into a kitchen.  As we keep group sizes small (normally up to six) I can give a good level of personal of tuition and ensure that everyone gets what they need from it. 

"I have always been interested in food. I worked for Sainsbury's, restructuring their product development teams and process, then in their marketing team, and finally was offered the position of Head of The Food and Innovation Centre, based on my love and knowledge of food. I got to work with most of the famous chefs (including Jamie most weeks), plus with industry experts in everything from pastry to potatoes. I have done quite a bit of radio and a bit of TV.

"I love fresh, seasonal, local food and am especially fond of Italian and Spanish food.  I hate pre-prepared, overly complicated, 'engineered' food."
