Not just a shop

West Down, the small village about 4 miles out of Ilfracombe itself, has a thriving shop. But it is not just a shop, it is a community asset run by the community itself.

Like many small villages, when our shopping habits changed in favour of superstores and the internet, the West Down local shop began to struggle. In 2012, the previous owners decided they could no longer continue.

But West Down is not just any other small village! Pure steely determination saw a voluntary committee find funding, register the shop as a society, and open up for business immediately. The shop has successfully run as a not-for-profit enterprise ever since!

Run by the community itself and staffed largely by local volunteers, the shop prides itself on selling good quality, local produce, as well as an impressive range of basics including organic, vegan and some far-from-basic luxury add-ons!

Looking for a vegan Magnum? Or bake-you-own Pecan Plaits? Turmeric? Oat milk? Or Devonshire apple juice?

The village also boasts the Crown Inn
- a traditional 17th century freehouse
in the heart of the village with a wide range of beers and spirits focusing on the local and artisanal.

And excellent food with one of the prettiest beer gardens in the area.

The village also has free parking for visitors, and the community field with traditional attractions like the swings and a see-saw, and lots of space to run around.

Here’s just a taster of the West Down Shop’s unique range of local produce:

Local pies and pasties, delivered fresh – and still warm – daily from Reeds of Braunton, the family-run butcher’s supplying the finest quality meat sourced locally within the West Country.

Local meat from Ivan Clark. Ivan opened his first shop in 1986 in Lynton, just within the border of the Exmoor National Park

Fresh fruit and veg from Edd’s the Greengrocer based right here in Ilfracombe

A wide range of bread fresh from the East and West Bakery in Barnstaple

Locally-made cakes and other treats.

Local jams and Fullabrook Honey.

Free range and organic eggs from Borough Farm in Woolacombe and Farmer Bob in Barnstaple.

The gorgeous (both in taste and appearance) Pull the Pin rums from the distillery in Ilfracombe. Gins from Exmoor-based Wicked Wolf. A range of beers and ciders including from local brewers – Combe Coastal Brewery and Madrigal. Devon wines including Sharphams. And there is cider made from West Down apples!

Also stocked are newspapers, local walking and cycling maps.

The Shop cannot guarantee to have everything in stock at any one time but will do their best to find you whatever you are looking for. The staff and volunteers are on-hand to offer you a traditional shopping experience in which they are there to help and advise and chat while you browse. They will even take your dry cleaning for you!

Shopping like shopping should be. Treat yourself!
